The Taste of Bath Guide to Eating Out in Autumn

Tis the season to be cosy! And while we wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t fancy venturing outdoors (check out our recent blog post for some of our favourite cold weather comforts to order from our online shop and enjoy at home) Bath is full of cosy corners to enjoy a cuppa and a piece of cake, a hearty meal or a pint by the fire. Supporting small independent businesses is at the heart of everything we do here at Taste of Bath, but we don’t just find fabulous local producers to include in our hampers – we also love to champion independent cafes, bars and pubs in Bath, so here’s a few of our favourite local spots to get out of the cold…

The Green Bird Café

This lovely little café is just the place for a treat – they serve a great breakfast (you might well spot the Taste of Bath team in there, having our monthly meetings over a bowl of their incredible porridge with chocolate chips) and they have a selection of fabulous cakes to wash down with a pot of tea, a cup of coffee or maybe a Henny & Joe’s chai latte (one of our favourite winter warmers – don’t fancy going out? Click here for our recipe to make it at home). The Green Bird is part of a great little community of independent shops on the beautiful Margaret’s Buildings, so you can also combine a visit with a nose around and a bit of shopping.

Our favourite winter warmer – a Henny & Joe’s dirty chai latte

This is one of our absolute favourite places to eat – choose a couple of their small plates (the menu changes all the time according to what’s in season, so you never know quite what you might find, but rest assured it’s always utterly delicious, and stars some of the best local produce to boot) and ask the very knowledgeable staff to suggest a glass of wine to wash them down, then while away an hour or two in the snug, candlelit surroundings of their Walcot St and Chapel Row bars.

The Canary Gin Bar

This cosy little bar is tailor-made for dark winter evenings – tuck yourself away inside and try their sensational line-up of gin cocktails, featuring gins from all over the world as well as their own Bath Gin, brewed just downstairs in the The Bath Distillery. Of course, for lazy evenings at home, you can grab a bottle of Bath Gin from our fabulous online shop – but we highly recommend a visit to the home of Bath Gin too, where you can discover a few more of their creations and experience their legendary mixology skills.

Fire & Brew

Perfect for a pick me up on a rainy day, this is a chilled-out, friendly restaurant that’s ideal whether you’re visiting for date night or getting the family together. Fire and Brew serve some of the city’s best pizza, along with a fantastic selection of beers and ciders, including all the very best local brews. It’s the creation of not one but two of our fabulous Taste of Bath producers, Electric Bear and Honeys Midford Cider (naturally you’ll find plenty of both on the drinks menu) alongside a lovely local restaurateur.

Where’s your favourite local spot to escape the winter weather? We’re so lucky in Bath to have so many brilliant independent businesses, and as foodies we simply must support them all to keep them going – and if that means having lots of fabulous meals out this autumn, then the Taste of Bath team for one are prepared to do our duty…
